The Story of ……………..DESTINY

Once upon a time, there were some very hard-working REALTORS who decided to play golf in their company tournament. It was a wonderful bright and sunny day, as it had rained the night before. It was a rousing day, seeing all their old friends and looking forward to a good game of "scramble".

Then on the second hole they were circled three times by some odd fluttering object, which finally landed shaking on the golf bag towel. We went over to look and heavens----it was a beautiful yellow & gray bird, but it had its head buried & looked frightened. Roger told the story of how in Florida there are "deranged seagulls" that played havoc on the golf course, but no, this bird was neither menacing nor large.

We decided to go on with our game, and driving cautiously, went to the next hole, gingerly pulling clubs out of the bag so as not to disturb it. A couple of holes later the bird decided to perch on the golf cart basket. And by the next hole he decided to climb right up my arm. By now we're really starting to attract attention, by other golfers, sponsors and golf club employees. We visited with a beverage cart girl, who radioed a ranger, who told us that it probably belonged to a nearby townhome owner and to send it up to the clubhouse.

Reluctantly, we sent it up, but upon checking, we found the bird shoved under a box with no food or water - which was "absolutely not good enough". By now my "farmer's daughter" background is coming out, as we were always nursing some kind of animal back to health. First I got him water, then I smashed some nuts I got in the bar, but he wouldn't eat.

At the end of the evening we faced the decision. The club's calls had found no owner, and no one had called searching. The bird needed shelter……………and since that is my specialty (shelter not birds) I agreed to take him overnight to keep him alive. We had an interesting night, since I had no real cage, and I decided he must be a songbird, because that was the birdseed he gobbled up as if part pig! The next day, I called again, but no owner had surfaced.

I brought him to the office (he is our mascot you know), and my other golfing buddy Mark said, "Deb, you have to keep that bird, it's destiny…………….he picked you out of hundreds, so it's destiny………" And so my Destiny was chosen & named.

We took Destiny to the "Birdman" who told us how very lucky we both were. Destiny had been out for a couple of days in a storm, and being a tropical bird was sick. He (we think) is less than a year old, has beautiful markings, and has had some training. He also has personality, as well as some attitude. And this charming cockatiel has a new mother. Someone who never thought of having a bird. And after investing in proper bird equipment, we're learning---I'm just not always sure who's training whom! And that's the story of DESTINY…………and a wonderful sunny golf day when I got a true BIRDIE !
